In less than 18 months, what is now an empty sporting field at Mulyan Public School will be transformed into a $1.7 million administration centre, described as one of the biggest projects in the region’s Education Infrastructure Program.

The first stage of construction was undertaken last Friday, with a team of surveyors, engineering and construction experts visiting the school to begin the planning process and conduct an onsite inspection.

More than 10 building experts pegged out the areas, undertook geology surveys and marked all the underground electrical and sewerage lines, taking back the information for further planning.

School principal John Smith said he and his team expected to see plans back within a month, for final consultation and approval with the school. Soon after that will be a call for tenders. Part of the funding requirements is that a local builder be appointed to complete it.

The administration block is not the only building the school will gain, with a new canteen worth $800,000 also planned for the grounds. In total, $2.5 million worth of construction will happen in just 18 months, welcome spending in the Cowra community, Mr Smith said.

“It’s a pretty tight time frame, for two projects this big, but it has to be,” Mr Smith said. “Part of the funding requirements is that we must be moved into the building by January 2011.”

The funding is part of Round 2 of the Rudd Government’s Primary Schools for the 21st Century Program in the Building the Education Revolution program.

The building will also come with new furniture.
